IPL 2025: Gaikwad Bemoans Dropped Catches and Poor Powerplays as CSK Falls to RCB
On March 29 (ANI), following Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) defeat against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), captain Ruturaj Gaikwad stated that 170 runs were just par for the course at the Chepauk pitch. He also mentioned that missed catches and additional boundaries contributed significantly to their loss.
Josh Hazlewood and Yash Dayal's impressive bowling performances enabled Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) to clinch a 50-run victory against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) during their IPL encounter at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium on Thursday.
During the post-match interview, Gaikwad stated, “Honestly speaking, I believe 170 was an average total for this pitch. Batting wasn’t particularly easy. We had a tough day with our bowling which hurt us significantly. Ultimately, when facing a target like 170, your approach at the crease changes. There’s more time as soon as you step up to bat. However, when trying to chase around 20 additional runs on a surface known to slow down once the ball ages, adjustments must be made right from the start of the innings. As expected, the conditions became increasingly sluggish over time. For about five overs, the new ball behaved unusually, sticking quite a bit—its behavior remained unclear.”
Rahul (Tripathi) supported his play, and I followed suit with mine. Sometimes strategies pay off, and sometimes they do not. Often, you set a target score in your head, and when trying to chase down an additional 20 runs, you aim to stay one step ahead of the competition. That’s how we approached it, but it didn’t quite pan out as planned. Nevertheless, I’m glad we managed to keep the loss within reasonable bounds, ending up only 50 runs short.
Certainly, having three top-tier spin bowlers in your lineup presents a completely different situation; ideally, newcomers should encounter these players. This significantly alters the course of the game. Our opponents continued their relentless assault as key moments saw us dropping critical catches. Following those mistakes came additional boundaries or sixes which further fueled our adversaries' momentum until the very last overs. With a lengthy journey ahead to Guwahati for the next Rajasthan Royals fixture, mental readiness will be essential. In tournaments such as the IPL, encountering tough days with bat and ball is inevitable, yet improving our fielding remains imperative. He ended his thoughts emphasizing this point, indicating they must return more robust in terms of field performance.
RCB secured their first victory against CSK at the Yellow Army's home stadium, Chepauk Stadium, since 2008.
During the game, CSK secured the win at the coin toss and decided to field first. Mitchel Starc took an early wicket, dismissing Suryakumar Yadav for just one run off four deliveries. Later, Pat Cummins contributed significantly with the ball, taking crucial wickets including those of Ben Stokes and Dinesh Karthik. Glenn Maxwell chipped in with two wickets as well. In their innings, RCB lost some quick wickets which slowed them down considerably. However, Harshal Patel showed resilience scoring 29 runs before being dismissed by Shardul Thakur. Despite valiant efforts from Mahesh Bhupathi, who scored 37 runs, RCB could only manage to reach 146/8. MS Dhoni provided a late surge adding valuable runs towards the end, finishing unbeaten on 30 off 16 balls, hitting three boundaries and two maximums.
