US Communications Watchdog Questions Disney Over Diversity Practices
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC), which oversees the regulation of TV and satellite content in the United States, has announced an investigation into The Walt Disney Company along with its subsidiary, ABC Television Network. This probe aims to verify if these companies' hiring processes comply with the FCC’s guidelines on equal employment opportunities.
The FCC Chair, Brendan Carr, has sent a letter to Disney’s CEO, Robert Alan Iger, notifying him about the decision. Disney stated they will work together with the regulatory body throughout the inquiry.
Amid concerns about Disney and ABC potentially employing new personnel according to ‘Diversity, Equity and Inclusion’ (DEI) guidelines, Carr initiated this investigation. In his correspondence with Disney, Carr acknowledged the corporation's history of producing successful box office hits and programs but highlighted that their stance on quality, founded on merit, seems to have shifted.
He mentioned that Disney has faced several controversies regarding its DEI policies, though he did not provide specifics.
In 2022, Disney found itself embroiled in a high-profile conflict with Florida’s governor, Ron DeSantis. The disagreement centered on a piece of legislation backed by DeSantis that placed restrictions on how topics related to sexual orientation and gender identity could be taught in schools.
Critics opposed the legislation, labeling it as discriminatory towards homosexuals. Disney became part of the wave of condemnation which resulted in a public dispute between all parties involved. This altercation was resolved by the end of last year.
Carr mentioned he aims to confirm that Disney isn’t breaching FCC rules "through the promotion of discriminatory practices related to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion." While Carr acknowledged that the company has implemented measures to guarantee fair chances for applicants seeking roles, he also stated that further thorough investigation is necessary to verify compliance with every standard.
Earlier this month, Disney revealed modifications to certain policies, which involved discontinuing an online platform aimed at showcasing individuals and narratives from marginalized groups.
Disney has softened the social messages displayed before movie screenings in theaters. Rather than cautioning viewers about "negative depictions and/or mistreatment of people or cultures," the statements now read: "This program is presented as originally created and may include stereotypes or negative depictions."
The US President, Donald Trump, does not support Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives. On his inaugural day, he issued an order as part of numerous executive actions named 'Terminating Extreme and Unnecessary Government DEI Programs and Preferences.'
This directive essentially brought an end to all Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives across the U.S. federal government. Trump subsequently instructed that all federal DEI employees be put on paid leave with plans for eventual termination.
The recent administration has adopted a confrontational stance toward the press across multiple areas. This week alone, there have been legal proceedings concerning the closure of the U.S.-based media organization 'Voice of America.'
The 47th U.S. president has similarly found himself involved in a disagreement with The Associated Press regarding the news organization’s reference to the 'Gulf of Mexico.' This conflict arose after Trump attempted to change the name to the 'Gulf of America.'
Since being appointed chairman by Trump, Carr has led the FCC towards a more proactive stance. The U.S. regulatory body now has ongoing inquiries into major networks and broadcasting companies like ABC, CBS, and NBC.
Many people think these investigations have political motives, since Trump often criticized and referred to them as "purveyors of fake news."
