Maiden OFIE Market Booms: Traders and Farmers Praise Sammi Awuku

The town of Amanokrom in the Akuapem North Constituency burst into life on Saturday, March 29, 2025, when it welcomed the first-ever staging of the Ofie Market , a regional trade event designed to link farmers directly with consumers.

The project led by Member of Parliament Mr. Sammi Awuku attracted significant support and received extensive praise from farmers, traders, and locals.

The market experienced a remarkable attendance, witnessing rapid sales of freshly harvested items like fruits, veggies, cereals, and various local products. This event marked a significant turning point for numerous involved cultivators and merchants who had faced considerable challenges due to restricted market reach and substantial crop wastage over several months.

I've hasn't seen sales like this in quite some time," a trader enthusiastically declared. "We owe all of this success to Hon. Sammi Awuku. I'm begging him to make this a recurring event—perhaps every fortnight.

A nearby farmer, burdened by high demand, added, "This situation has greatly helped us. Typically, we face significant losses after harvest due to our inability to find buyers. God bless Sammi Awuku for this support. The products from my farm were sold out right from the truck before we had a chance to unload."

Customers were equally pleased with the standard, volume, and cost-effectiveness of the products available. A customer visiting from Accra commented, "This is an excellent concept. I found all the items I intended to purchase and some extra ones too. It seems like we will have ample supplies to last our household for about a month."

While speaking with reporters at the side of the event, Sammi Awuku discussed the motivation driving this initiative.

Last year, during my campaigning across the region, I noticed a substantial population of farmers predominantly situated in the southern area of the constituency around the lower slopes," he stated. "These farmers frequently voiced their worries about the considerable amount of produce lost after harvesting and the minimal earnings derived from selling what little was left.

This Ofie Market is my answer to that requirement. I'm particularly delighted with what I see happening here today. My wish is for our diligent farmers to be motivated to boost their production to cater to the increasing demand we've generated. Our plan is to host this market on the final Saturday of each month. Therefore, the subsequent Ofie Market will take place on April 26, 2025.

The project garnered significant support from local chiefs as well. Chief Nana Osim Kwatia II of Amanokrom praised the Member of Parliament’s foresight and highlighted the beneficial impact the event had on the town’s economy, noting its far-reaching benefits.

“The Chief commented, ‘This is an excellent endeavor.’ He added, ‘God bless our child, Sammi Awuku, for his efforts. This project goes beyond just boosting marketplace sales; it has also sparked some economic growth within our community. It appears that local eateries and smaller enterprises are profiting as well. We should all strive diligently to maintain this progress.’”

The impressive first outing of the Ofie Market positions it as a game-changing tool for advancing agribusiness and fostering grassroots economic growth in Akuapem North. Both traders, farmers, and local inhabitants are eagerly anticipating the subsequent event.
