- In 2022, the passing of Osinach Nwachukwu, the creator of the Ekwueme hit song, led to widespread grief around the world.
- The deceased artist's spouse, Peter Nwachukwu, was considered the primary person of interest in the case of Osinachi's killing and was taken into custody in 2022.
- Reports suggest that the musician's spouse was condemned to death by hanging due to her murder.
Osinach Nwachukwu's spouse, Peter Nwachukwu, who is married to the renowned Ekwueme hitmaker, has received a death sentence via hanging.
In April 2022, the court ruled that Peter was responsible for manslaughter in connection with his wife's death.
Following the passing of the cherished artist, inquiries about her demise commenced, and the Nigerian government, via the Office of the Attorney General, pursued legal action.
The prosecution effectively released the proof needed to convict the defendant, the judge shared.
Initially charged with 23 counts, Nwachukwu had his first hearing on June 3, 2022, conducted by the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation.
The allegations ranged from charges of domestic abuse, mistreatment of children, and threats of violence to manslaughter punishable by capital punishment, covering a broad spectrum.
During the trial, the prosecution presented 17 witnesses, including the couple’s two children who gave testimony as the fourth and fifth witnesses.
In defense, Nwachukwu called upon an additional four witnesses and presented four documents to strengthen his argument.
Despite the defense's efforts, the court noted that the body of evidence suggested Nwachukwu was responsible.
Defense attorney Reginald Nwali pleaded with the court to merge considerations of justice with empathy during the sentencing phase.
However, emphasizing the gravity of the offense, prosecutor Mrs Aderonke Imala asked the court to apply the law accordingly.
