Trump and Carney Clash in First Call as Tariff War Rages On

US President Donald Trump stated that his initial conversation with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was "highly fruitful," despite the continuing trade dispute between these neighboring allied nations.

In a Truth Social post, Trump stated that they would meet “right away” following Canada’s elections on April 28th to talk about “politics, business, and every other aspect.”

The proposed 25% tariff on vehicles imported into the U.S., set to take effect next week, may have severe consequences for Canada’s automobile sector.

On Thursday night, Carney stated that the US can no longer be considered a dependable trade ally, and he also mentioned that the relationship between the US and Canada will henceforth always have a fundamentally altered dynamic.

The newly appointed prime minister, currently engaged in their election campaign, has not yet addressed the conversation with Trump.

Traditionally, shortly after taking office, Canadian leaders have considered reaching out to their U.S. counterparts as a key priority.

The conversation between Carney and Trump marks the first one since Carney assumed office on February 14th.

Besides initiating a trade conflict with Canada due to tariffs, Trump has frequently advocated for Canada to join the United States as its 51st state—a stance that has infuriated numerous Canadians.

Carney, the leader of Canada's Liberal Party, also stated that the crucial Canada-US Automotive Products Agreement from 1965 is now "over" due to the tariffs.

He likewise pledged to enforce retaliatory tariffs with "maximum effect" on the United States.
