Lagos Launches Investigation After Deadly Overhead Water Tank Incident Kills Woman

The Lagos State government has said it will initiate an inquiry into the unfortunate demise of Cynthia Oguzie, a 30-year-old woman who allegedly died after an elevated water tank fell onto her residence in the Lekki district.

Adewunmi Okoh, who represents the Lagos State Safety Commission, verified the occurrence to PUNCH Metro when speaking with them on Wednesday during an interview regarding this tragic event.

According to PUNCH Metro on Wednesday, a brief video seen by our reporter depicted the victim lifelessly on her bed. Nonetheless, a female voice in the background asserted that she was still breathing.

A different clip documented the breached water tank and debris from the structure, whereas extra images depicted Cynthia Oguzie’s unresponsive form in what seemed like a medical environment.

It was reported that Oguzie had only recently moved into the Lekki flat about two months prior to the unfortunate event.

A Facebook user claiming to be the victim's brother, Chukwuebuka Nathaniel, posted information about the event on his profile, attributing the disaster to poor-quality building standards.

"Be cautious of Lekki buildings and their water tanks," he penned.

“This is how they sent my sister to her early grave. Thank you, so-called Lekki landlord, and your engineer, for doing this type of water stand,” he added.

In response to the event, Mrs. Okoh informed our correspondent that the agency’s investigative unit was ready to be sent to the location for a comprehensive inquiry.

To make things easier, she encouraged the brother of the deceased to share the precise location of the building, emphasizing that this information would assist the commission in identifying those accountable for the unfortunate event.

"We require specifics about the event. This issue will be escalated to the Director General. The responsible officers will assume control of the situation. They will conduct an investigation into the incident," Okoh told PUNCH Metro.

The commission, which was established to uphold public safety, has investigated several similar incidents in the past, including the case of a young man who died after jumping into a melting pot and has issued sanctions upon the completion of such probes.

In the meantime, attempts by our correspondent to contact the grieving brother, Nathaniel, proved futile, as neither phone calls nor Facebook messages received any response by the time this report was compiled.
