WTO Warns: US-China Trade War Could Plunge Global Trade by 80%

By Kazeem Ugbodaga

Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Director-General of the WTO, has issued a strong caution to world leaders about the intensifying trade dispute between the U.S. and China.

She warned that this scenario might lead to a disastrous downturn in worldwide commerce and substantially disturb the global economic system.

On Wednesday, Okonjo-Iweala released a statement disclosing initial forecasts suggesting that goods traded between the world’s two biggest economic powers might drop by up to 80%. This dramatic projection could have far-reaching repercussions across the global marketplace.

The WTO's recent evaluations indicate that the current cycle of reciprocal trade measures is likely to yield extensive impacts beyond the United States and China, affecting countries globally, with particular repercussions for the most susceptible economies.

The rising trade disputes between the United States and China carry a substantial risk of causing a sudden decrease in two-way commerce. This scenario is grave and might lead to enduring consequences for worldwide economic stability, Okonjo-Iweala stated.

Our forecasts indicate that the impacts might reach well past the U.S. and China, having an unequal effect on less developed countries and possibly causing the worldwide economy to spiral downward.

Given that US-China bilateral trade accounts for roughly 3% of worldwide commerce, the World Trade Organization's chief cautioned that the collapse of this significant economic partnership might shatter the global trading framework, resulting in a perilous split in geopolitics.

Okonjo-Iweala pointed out that a potential division of global trade based on these new geopolitical boundaries might cause a reduction in global real GDP by approximately 7%, leading to prolonged economic consequences that could severely hinder worldwide recovery attempts.

As the situation intensifies, Okonjo-Iweala highlighted the urgent danger presented by trade diversion – the alteration of trading patterns as countries attempt to mitigate the impact of escalating tensions between the United States and China.

She highlighted that without collaborative efforts from the global community, these changes might result in significant economic seclusion for numerous countries, especially the least developed ones that rely heavily on unrestricted, rule-governed trade for their sustenance.

"It is essential for the worldwide community to collaborate in order to maintain the openness of the international trade system," she emphasized.

The WTO serves as a forum for discussion, and all member countries have the ability to contribute to the stability of the worldwide economic system. It is crucial that we address this matter through a cooperative approach to avoid additional harm.
