EFCC Investigates Hidden $86,500 Found in Seized Bedspread
Kano Zonal Directorate of the agency responsible for tackling economic and financial crimes (EFCC) has initiated an inquiry into the $86,500, 305,150 Saudi Riyals, and €200 confiscated by officials from the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport.
The money was found in an unattended bag believed to have been smuggled and seized the previous Sunday when a clearance agent tried to claim the luggage.
During the physical examination, Customs officials discovered hidden foreign currencies within duvets and date packs inside the baggage.
The agency stated in an X post that further investigation resulted in the arrests of both Bala and Abdullahi Tahir, another suspect alleged to be responsible for collecting the bag following its approval.
It was mentioned that the funds were transferred to the EFCC by Chief Superintendent of Customs, CSC Abdulahi Hashim, and accepted on behalf of the commission by Assistant Commander of the EFCC, ACE11 Aminu Bashir.
The statement indicated that both the suspects and the confiscated funds were under the jurisdiction of the agency and would face legal proceedings at a later date.
The EFCC additionally praised the Customs for their alertness and emphasized the significance of collaboration between different agencies in protecting the country’s economic stability.
The agency stated that they were working alongside Customs and other partners, stepping up initiatives to educate all parties involved about the legislative rules concerning money transfers as well as the repercussions of failing to comply.
