Russia Announces Three-day Unilateral Ceasefire in Ukraine for World War II Event

April 28, 2025 (ENA) — Addis Ababa The Russian President, Vladimir Putin, announced a temporary 72-hour cease-fire in Ukraine to align with the country’s significant national event commemorating Victory Day, which celebrates the defeat of Nazi Germany during World War II.

It was reported that Russia urged Ukraine to consent to the halt as well.

The Russian Armed Forces have announced they will halt combat operations for humanitarian reasons starting at noon on May 8 (9:00 PM GMT on May 7) until midnight on May 11 (9:00 PM GMT on May 10). This information was provided by the Kremlin press office following President Putin’s decree.

In response, Ukraine stated that if Russia genuinely desires peace, it should halt all hostilities for a period of 30 days.

"If Russia genuinely desires peace, it should halt all hostilities at once," stated Andrii Sybiha, the Foreign Minister of Ukraine.

He emphasized once again that Ukraine is prepared for a "durable, trustworthy, and comprehensive cessation of hostilities" lasting at least 30 consecutive days.

Russia will commemorate the 80th anniversary of the conclusion of the Great Patriotic War, which they refer to as their conflict against the Third Reich between 1942 and 1945—widely recognized as part of World War II—on May 9.

"During this timeframe, all combat activities will stop," the Kremlin stated. The decision was made by Putin for "compassionate reasons," the statement continued.

The Kremlin issued a statement urging Kiev to agree to the truce, but also vowed that in case of any breaches by Ukrainian forces, Russian military units would respond with "an appropriate and potent reaction."
