Trouble in Paradise: Plumtree Man Charged with Maternal Abuse
A 43-year-old man hailing from Chief Tshitshi in Plumtree has been ordered to complete 210 hours of community service following his admission of guilt for physically abusing his mother, whom he accused of practicing witchcraft.
Recently, Mandlenkosi Sibanda faced Plumtree magistrate Joshua Nembaware and was ordered to serve 12 months in prison with six months of this sentence being suspended.
The remaining six months were converted into 210 hours of community service.
Prosecutor Selestine Madziwa informed the court that the complainant is Sibanda’s mother, Margaret Mpofu (68), who comes from the same village.
The court learned that on January 29 of this year, Sibanda visited his mother’s residence and yelled profanities at her, accusing her of being a witch responsible for his marital separation.
Sibanda attacked his mother with a wooden stick, resulting in injuries covering her entire body.
The issue was brought to the attention of the authorities, resulting in Sibanda’s detention.
His mother was sent to the hospital for a medical check-up.
